Ba Sociology offers a comprehensive curriculum for undergraduate and graduate students. Its focus is on the study of social action and society and is designed to teach students how to evaluate theories and arguments while using sociological evidence to answer questions.
A student may begin with a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, which covers a broad range of courses from Introduction to Sociology to Introduction to Psychology. Upon completion of this degree, students will be prepared to enter the field as professional Social Workers or Mental Health Counselors.
BSN students can choose to specialize in a particular area such as Community Health, Developmental Disabilities, Social Service Administration, Women, Aging and Disability Studies or Public Policy. In most cases, they are required to take courses that teach students basic concepts of Sociology. Students can also complete specialized degrees in specific areas such as Business Sociology.
A Master of Science in Social Work focuses on a specific discipline of Sociology. Master's students are trained to be sociologists themselves. They must complete a number of courses that include research methodology and social policy development. Master's students then become licensed in various fields including Human Services, Social Policy, Public Health, Aging and Disability Studies and Psychology.
An Associate of Science in Social Work prepares students to work in either an academic setting or the private sector. An Associate's degree focuses on a specific discipline of Sociology and is less expensive than a Master's degree. It does not require as many courses, although some students choose to complete more courses to broaden their understanding of a particular area of Sociology.
BSN students can earn their Doctorate degree in Social Work by specializing in a specific field. Students can choose to specialize in Education, Family Studies or Marriage and Divorce.
A Doctorate degree requires students to complete additional courses to prepare them for the job of an Assistant Professor at a university or college. Students may elect to specialize in the areas of Sociology, Human Services, Aging and Disability Studies or Public Policy.
PhD, or Doctorate of Philosophy, program students can pursue doctoral studies in Social Sciences. As a doctoral candidate, students must first complete the requirements of the National Board of Higher Education (NEH) which includes a dissertation review, a thesis, and a thorough writing sample. The dissertation is a culmination of a student's academic efforts and is based on written research findings, case studies and/or empirical evidence.
After completing the required requirements of the doctorate program, the student chooses a dissertation topic. In most cases, the dissertation is required to be researched by another student as well as a committee of scholars from the program. Dissertations are supervised by the University's Committee on Dissertation Research. Dissertations in the dissertation field often involve extensive documentation.
Many social workers also choose . . . . . . to obtain a Master of Arts and Doctorate degrees in Social Work. These degrees allow students to focus more on their area of study.
For students interested in becoming social workers, there are online schools that offer both graduate and undergraduate degrees in social work. The online programs have an advantage of allowing students to complete a bachelor's degree in a variety of disciplines without having to travel to a traditional classroom setting.
There are also some colleges that offer Master's degrees that have a focus on Sociology. The Master of Science in Social Work is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical training in the areas of Sociology. The Master of Science in Sociology is a two-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 150 credits. Some of these courses involve research methodology, analysis of social issues and research methods.
Students may also complete the online Master's degrees through accredited universities that offer Master's of Science in Social Work programs, especially if they are working professionals. These types of online universities usually charge higher tuition rates and may not offer financial aid to help pay for tuition.
