The Master of Information Science, also known as the Master of Information Library Studies, is a three-year bachelor's degree program that prepares students for careers within the information technology field. This course is highly focused on the information technology field and has very few general education courses or core courses included.
The MLIS degree focuses on learning how to handle and operate the systems that run through the internet information technology field. This includes the use of computers, databases, software and Internet applications.
The MLIS degree allows students to choose what information science, computer science or related field they would like to pursue. Students who wish to become a librarian may obtain this degree or those who wish to pursue a career in the fields of business, education or even government may choose this as their major.
The major focuses on the information sciences field and the way it functions. Students will learn how to interpret data, create and manage databases, read data and more. They will also learn how to communicate information between individuals, departments and organizations. With this degree, students will learn how to manage, maintain and manipulate all of these systems.
This degree is very popular among business schools. The MLIS degree allows students to understand how the different elements of the information science field are related and how they work.
The Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Sciences degree can be taken at many colleges and universities. Students can also complete the degree online through a campus-based MLIS program. Students must be admitted to one of these programs by their chosen universities and community colleges in order to obtain the degree.
To earn a MLIS degree, students must take classes in English Composition, Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics. Other classes that may be required for this degree include statistics, human resources, information technology, management, information assurance and information systems. Some universities require students to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Sciences (BSLS) and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration (BSBA). These degrees are not exactly the same and are usually awarded to students who have already completed a bachelor's degree and who want to continue on with an advanced degree or are not satisfied with the Bachelor of Science in Library and Information Science degree that they have earned.
The major is not widely recognized across the country. Many schools do not offer this degree and there are only a few places that offer online programs. Most community colleges or universities that offer the MLIS programs do not offer this degree and many employers consider this a non-major for their employees.
However, this program does have the potential to provide an excellent education for students interested in this line of study. In fact, it is considered a competitive major, especially when compared to degrees that are not in this field.
