The National Association of Social Work is an organization of licensed social workers in the US. NASW has approximately 120,000 registered members. The NASW offers guidance, support, research, education, advocacy, and many other resources to its members as well as for social work professionals in general.
NASW, which stands for the National Association of Supervisors of Social Work, was founded in 1953. NASW is part of the American Association of Social Workers. The NASW is also known as NASWA, or National Society of Social Workers.
NASW is affiliated with the American Association of Colleges and Schools (AACS) as well as National Council Licensure Examination Board (NCLEB). The NASW has also been affiliated with the National Council Licensure Examination Board (NCLB) since 1980. NASWA is recognized by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The NASW also has been an active member of the National Council Licensure Examination Board (NCLEB). The NASW's certification is recognized by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NCCA-CLCS), which is part of the National Council for Accreditation of Laboratory Educators (NCAA-ELCE).
NASWA is not regulated by the Commission on Accreditation of Laboratory Education (CALEA). Although it is not regulated by the Commission on Accreditation of Laboratory Education, NASWA is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Clinical Laboratory Science Education (CAELES). NASWA is accredited by the State Medical board in each state and jurisdiction in which NASW participates in the state licensing system. NASWA's accreditation is based upon accreditation by the NCCA-CLCS and accreditation by the American Association of Clinical Laboratory Technicians (AACT) as well as by the accrediting board of the State Medical Board of California (SMBC). NASWA is accredited by the State Medical Board in all states and jurisdictions in which NASW operates.
NASWA is also affiliated with the American Psychological Association (APA). NASW works closely with the state licensing agencies of the APA to assure compliance with the organization's Standards of Professional Practice. NASW is also affiliated with the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the National Board for Professional and Ethical Standards in Medicine (NBPETS). The NASW publishes and distributes the Journal of Clinical Psychology. The journal provides a bimonthly print publication with a wide range of special issues focusing on family issues.
The Journal of Clinical Psychology focuses on research methodology in clinical psychology, social work practice, and research methods used in social work. It presents research findings on issues concerning the family, child development, children and adolescent development, gerontology, family medicine, geriatrics, social work, family systems, gerontology, geriatric care, nursing, mental health, neuropsychology, and psychology.
The journal also provides a forum for contributions to the fields of psychology and social work that may be of interest to its readers. It also publishes research findings on new theories in these areas and provides opportunities for continuing education in continuing education programs, trainings, conferences, training courses, and publications that will facilitate the professional development of NASW members. The journal publishes books and articles on issues that have an influence on clinical psychology.
NASW also publishes a series of professional societies, journals, and publications. The Journal of Social Work and Mental Health publishes peer-reviewed research . . . . . . studies and reviews on research findings from the professional worlds of social work, healthcare, and mental health. The Journal of Clinical Psychology is a special issue that focuses on research findings on issues of family functioning and development, the effects of aging on mental health, and the assessment of the quality of life of patients with mental disorders or mental retardation.
The Journal of Consulting Psychology is a peer review process that examines the literature of psychological services. This peer review provides the professional perspective of professionals in the consulting field who are responsible for designing and implementing psychological therapy strategies.
NASW publishes a series of books that provide information and research on specific issues of practice that are relevant to the practice of psychology. A comprehensive collection of articles and book chapters on topics that pertain to research methods and methodologies in clinical psychology is the Journal of Consulting Psychology Research. A special issue of the Journal of Clinical Psychology Research on research methodology in clinical psychology is called the Annual Review of Clinical Psychology. The Journal of the Society of Family Therapy also publishes an issue focusing on research methodology in family practice.
The professional societies that belong to NASW include the American Psychological Associations (APA), the National Council for Accreditation of Clinical and Behavioral Specialists (NCCBS) and the American Psychological Society (APS). The NCCBS is an organization dedicated to accreditation of mental health care organizations. NASW is an official member of NCCBS. NASW is also an official member of APA.
